Nor’-West Gales
North-westerly gales blustered through Canterbury on Monday evening and yesterday disrupting the power supply and telephone communications in many areas. Kaikoura was buffeted by winds up to 70 miles an hour; the wind in Christchurch reached 45 miles an hour. The toll circuit from Kaikoura to Christchurch was cut four miles south of Amberley at 8 a.m. yesterday; it was restored at 10.30 a.m. An area south of the Waipara River including Amberley township was without electricity for about two hours on Monday night. The power was cut about 8 p.m. when a branch broke a highvoltage conductor west of Amberley. Power remained on in Kaikoura but was cut in both the Inland Road area and near the township for several hours. One farmer reported the loss of the roofs of both his hay shed an pigsty. Another farmer on the Inland Road lost the roofs of two sheds. In Christchurch a maximum temperature of 72 degrees was recorded at the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m.
