Vital Game For N.Z.

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SAIGON. The New Zealand soccer team, beaten in its first match, by Australia, must defeat Singapore today to have any chance of reaching the semifinals in South Vietnam’s National Day tournament. With the top two teams from each section to enter the semi-finals, even a draw with Singapore would probably not be sufficient to enable New Zealand to make further progress. The top teams in New Zealand’s group are Australia

and South Vietnam, who both won their opening games, and both are expected to beat Singapore. If New Zealand can win its next match, the team will then have a final chance of reaching the semi-finals, when it completes its group matches against South Vietnam on Friday. Singapore has been hard hit by injuries, being reduced to 10 men in the match when it was beaten, 2-0, by South Vietnam on Saturday. At one stage it had only nine fit men on the field.

New Zealand outplayed Australia for much of the game in midfield last Sunday, and it was Australia’s hardstriking forward play, coupled with some looseness in New Zealand’s defence, that won the match for Australia.
