CORRIEDALE JUDGE
Australian For A. and P. Show The first Australian to judge Corriedales at a New Zealand A. and P. show arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He is Mr W. V. Seeker, of Happy Valley, South Australia. , “New Zealand methods, of judging differ from our methods, but I hope to carry out the job just as efficiently the Australian way,” said Mr Seeker. Mr Seeker has been a registered breeder of Corriedales since he was 16 and today he runs about 500 registered ewes. There were not many Corriedales in South Australia, which was predominantly Merino country, he said. Asked if Australian farmers had been affected by the recession in wool prices. Mr Seeker said prices for crossbred wool were down this year. “It’s a bit alarming because we don’t know where it will stop.” Although wool prices might be down he believed the losses could be made up in other directions, especially in the meat market. He said that with Corriedales lambing percentages had been good. There was a good outlet for IJ-year-old ewes and prices were higher for other breeds. “We also have a very good weaner wether lamb market which goes a long way towards closing the gap,” he said. At the present time South Australia was gripped with a severe drought and in some areas hardly any stock was left, Mr Seeker said.
