ELEPHANT SEAL

The animal on the beach at Mangamaunu, 12 miles north of Kaikoura, a picture of which appeared in “The Press” yesterday, has now been identified as an elephant seal. When discovered on Sunday morning it had just given birth to a pup. These seals usually go ashore at either Macquarie or Campbell Island.

Many people have been to the beach to see the seal and her pup. Because the animals could be disturbed, permission has been obtained from the Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) to have them moved to the Edwin Percival Marine j Laboratory at Kaikoura for about three weeks.
