WHITEBAIT SEASON

Some Success In Buller (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Nov. 6. Although the 1967 whitebait season in Buller has been far from the most productive on record, the catches so far have been considerably better than last year's. With only a few weeks of the season left, the National Airways Corporation has taken 15.0821 b to Wellington, compared with last year’s total of 97911 b.

There is little chance of much more whitebait being flown north this year, dealers are finding it hard to buy because most of what is caught finds its way to the family freezer or is sold privately. Last season, one of the poorest on record, came after a bumper catch in 1965. That season about 80001 b was airfreighted in one week. High hopes were held for this season and several fishermen had good catches early, but weeks went by with hardly a shoal to be seen and most whitebaiters have packed away their nets until next year.
