Discharge ‘Good News’

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 6. The Bishop of Wellington (the Rev. H. W. Baines) said this evening that Professor Geering’s discharge was good news to all those who had found and valued the truth about the Christian religion. “Professor Geering’s remarks made people ask the important questions,” he said, “this is excellent. “But he did not always make people expect the right answers.” The Rev. Godfrey Wilson, of St Peter’s church, said Professor Geering’s comments had disturbed the sleepiness of the Church. “Placing charges against Professor Geering for his remarks was a misconception,” he said. “I am not surprised they have been dismissed.” The chairman of the Congregational Union of New Zealand (the Rev. J. B. Chambers), said freedom of thought and speech was as important inside the Church as outside “The dismissal of the charges is therefore a very good thing,” he said.
