LIMITED DEMAND

Bank Late Closing (N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, Nov. 6. Demand for 9 p.m. closing of trading banks on Friday nights was limited, Mr R. O. Smillie, research director for the New Zealand Bankers’ Association, said today. Mr Smillie said banks’ experience in providing late night banking facilities “even at peak times, is that demand is limited in spite of widespread advertising. “Since 1961, they have provided late night facilities at chosen busy trading points throughout the country. But at the times most needed— Christmas Eve and the Thursday before Easter—use of this costly facility has been disappointing, and a loss to the bank,” he said. “Special arrangements can be made for banks to accept lodgements up to 5 p.m. on Friday but even this facility is seldom used.

“Banks would certainly consider extended facilities if it could be conclusively shown that a sufficient demand existed. The wider question of longer banking hours is subject to legislation.”
