Wanganui Ahead In College Cricket

In spite of a good recovery in the late afternoon by Christ’s College, Wanganui Collegiate held a firm grip on their annual cricket match at the college grounds in Christchurch yesterday. Batting first on a wicket affected by rain, College appeared to lack fighting spirit and was out for 128 after having lost nine wickets for 72 at lunch. Wanganui began crisply in its first innings and had scored 60 in 45 minutes at tea. In the last session some attractive batting took the total to 182 for the loss of six wickets. The College innings was held together largely through the efforts of the tall, right-hand batsman, S. A. L. Read, who drove powerfully In making 87.

With H. A. C. Munro he put on 50 for the last wicket in 75 minutes. For Wanganui the opening bowler, J. T. Baines, looked dangerous, and R. D. Cox bowled steadily. By the time Wanganui batted the pitch had dried, but the occasional ball kept low. J. C. Payton often threw discretion to the wind in making 37 tn 42 minutes and his was an unnecessary dismissal, as was that of the captain, M. R. Natush who was run out. T, H. Druce batted attractively late in the afternoon for 44 not out. Read and G. McKenzie looked the best of the College bowlers. Scores were:— CHRIST'S COLLEGE First Innings R. W.
