Exhibition Of Soviet Products And Life
An exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Soviet Union (1917-1967) is being held in the Provincial Council Chambers this week
Most of the exhibits were sent to New Zealand by the U.S.S.R.-New Zealand Society in Moscow. The exhibition, which is being shown in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, includes photographs, consumer goods, folk arts and handicrafts. There are numerous display photographs which illustrate various aspects of Soviet life, technology and industry, and the cities and countryside of the Soviet Union. The themes of the photographs include Siberia today, life in the Soviet Union, holiday resorts, and historical events.
The consumer goods on display include watches and clocks, binoculars, cameras, and a rifle. There is also pottery, wood carvings, ornaments and a range of amber jewellery. Among the examples of peasant crafts are Matryoshki dolls, sets of identical dolls in decreasing sizes, one inside the other. There is also a small display of carved and handpainted wooden objects from the Byelorussian Republic (White Russia). The exhibition of books includes multi-language books
on Russian art and art collections, books on ballet and science, and Russian novels. A number of books from the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan illustrate the progress made in printing techniques, and the republic’s literacy, since the 1917 revolution. There is also a small collection of children’s paintings. The exhibition, which is sponsored by the New Zea-land-U.S.S.R. Society, will be open until Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
