Russell In Grand Run At Addington

Although it was the New Zealand Cup candidates which attracted most interest, it was the trotter, Russell, which recorded the most impressive trial at Addington Raceway yesterday morning. The cup candidates Waitaki Hanover, Great Adios, Spry and Allakasam all looked in great heart. They were restricted to fairly easy tasks on a fast track.

Russell made the pace and was trotting easily two lengths in front of Scotleigh, with the same distance to Patriarch’s Son at the end of two miles in 4:25, the last half-mile in 1:1 2-5, and the final quarter in 30 3-5. Russell will only have to trot as boldly to be a big threat in the Worthy Queen Handicap. Phillmark made the pace, but Great Adios was pacing very easily alongside her at the end of 12 furlongs in 3:15, the last half-mile in 1:1 and the final quarter in 30. Great Adios is training on satisfactorily for R. P. Norton and looks in great heart, although much lighter in condition than when he raced in August. The Kaikoura Cup winner, Spry, worked under a hold over 12 furlongs in 3:23 3-5. the last half-mile in 1:7, and the final quarter in 32. He is in hard racing condition. Waitaki Hanover was going easily alongside Glen Vale at the end of 12 furlongs in 3:15 4-5, the last half-mile in 1:2 3-5. and the final quarter in 30 4-5. In spite of a light racing campaign. Waitaki Hanover looks well forward. AUakasam led Alpine Lady over two miles in 4:41 4-5, the last half-mile in 1:4 4-5, and the final quarter in 32 1-5. Both horses had plenty in reserve.

Gold Water and Viva Zabata were not at top at the end of 12 furlongs in 3:18 4-5. the last half-mile in 1:4. and the final quarter in 31 1-5. Julie Hanover'and Vista Abbey looked to be pacing splendidly at the end of an easy 12 furlongs. They took 1:4 4-5 for the last halfmile, with the pace really on only over the final furlong. Both are ready to win at short notice. LOYAL KNIGHT The Raglan pacer, Loyal Knight, one of the top pacers in the north last season worked well within himself over 12 furlongs in company with Richard Hanover and Cingalese. Loyal Knight jumped a patch on the track with about 80 yards to run and finished just behind the other two after taking 3:21 for the full

distance, the last half-mile in 1:3, and the final quarter in 30 3-5. Loyal Knight could be a danger in the Canterbury Free-for-all a race in which he will be driven by R. M. Cameron. Seven Nights Bold Axworth and Santa Claus finished clear of Stella Globe, which broke inside the final furlong, at the end of 12 furlongs in 3:25, the last half-mile in 1:3 2-5, and the final, quarter in 32. Seven Nights looks particularly well. Abbey Frost and Scotch Cherie had little pace on until the final quarter of their run over 12 furlongs. They sprinted this section in 29. the fastest of the morning and did it very well. Break Through and Double Step completed an easy task by sprinting half a mile in 1:4 4-5. Break Through looks ready to make a bold bid to win the Worthy Queen Handicap for a second time. Trafalgar finished ahead of Doug’s Choice, Stereo Scott, and Blue Tryax at the end of 12 furlongs in 3:21 4-5. the last half-mile in 1:5 4-5, and the last quarter in 31. Trafalgar looks close to winning form.
