Electrical Goods Destroyed
Smoke rose hundreds of feet when fire consumed the bulk store of Wooff and Salvesen, Ltd, electrical suppliers, in Lichfield Street, yesterday afternoon. The value of the damage was not available last evening. A call was received by the Christchurch Fire Brigade on the automatic alarm system at 3.30 p.m. and was followed by a number of telephone calls. When the first fire engines arrived the flames had a good hold. The whole interior of the old corrugated iron building appeared to be ablaze. Additional units were summoned when the seriousness of the fire was realised. Seven fire engines attended the outbreak—four from the central station, including the turntable ladder, two from Woolston and one from Sydenham.
It was a difficult fire to extinguish, said the chtef fire officer (Mr L. R. Osmond).
Thousands of gallons of water were poured on the blaze from seven hoses. It was half an hour before the fire was brought under control.
