Hidden Sales Tax Opposed

(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, November 5. Sir James Wattie said the Taxation Review Committee’s proposed 8 per cent sales tax on foodstuffs should be made at retail level so that consumers would know what tax they were paying. “Levied at the wholesale level, the tax will be hidden in the price and consumers will incline to the view that manufacturers and traders are overcharging,” said Sir James Wattie. “At retail level the tax would, of course, be less than 8 per cent.” Sir James Wattie, managing director of J. Wattie Canneries, said, at first glance, there appeared to be some overdue relief for companies in the report.
