Obituary Mrs E. J. Melhuish

Mrs Edna Jane Melhuish, who died recently after a short illness, was well known in Christchurch for her community service. Mrs Melhuish made an outstanding contribution to many branches of the Christchurch Central Mission’s work.

She was a member of Lifeline’s “trouble team” and was on the Rehua Maori Boys Hostel Committee. She also took part in a recent survey for the mission on the needs of the aged. Because of her interest in the Maori people, she was made a member of the Maori Tribal Committee and was on the committee of the Maori Women’s Welfare League. Mrs Melhuish’s work for the Country Women’s Institute movement extended over many years. At the time of her death she had been an executive member of the Canterbury federation for four years and was a voluntary organiser. She represented the federation on the Templeton Chapel Appeal Committee and the Templeton Welfare Council. In the Mairehau C.W.L she had held the offices of secretary and treasurer. A voluntary driver for the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind, Mrs Melhuish was also actively interested in the work of Kingslea Girls Home. Mrs Melhuish’s husband, Mr R. W. Melhuish, died about 16 years ago. She is survived by four daughters and one son. They are Mesdames Mona Woods, Honor Whitlow, Janette Ward, Miss Rosalie Melhuish, and Mr Robert Melhuish.
