Canty XI Lacks Fast Bowlers

A strong batting side, but one that may have some deficiencies in its attack, has been selected by the Canterbury selector (Mr W. McD. Anderson) as the Canterbury Invitation XI to play New Zealand at Lancaster Park on November 10,11 and 13.

The side includes K. Thomson and B. W. Yuile, two of the New Zealand players who will tour Australia during November and December. The team selected is: G. T. Dowling (captain). C. L

Bull, B. F. Hastings, K. Thomson, B. W. Yuile, J. W Burtt, C. J. Stevens, J. T. Ward, K. I. Ferries, R. C. Merring, N. A. Huxford. In G. T. Dowling, B. F. Hastings and K. Thomson, Canterbury has three batsmen who have been most successful at Plunket Shield level. J. W. Burtt and C. L. Bull did well in first-class cricket last season, and C. J. Stevens, while not meeting with much success when he played for Canterbury previously, has been batting extremely well in club cricket so far this season. However, with R. C. Motz and B. R. Taylor in the New Zealand side, the bowling does lack the speed that has been one of Canterbury’s most potent weapons in recent seasons. N. A. Huxford is a lively opening bowler but he has been troubled by injury in the two matches he nhas played 1 Christchurch. K. I. Ferries is a consistently accurate bowler, and R. C. Merrln has had success in- minor representative matches.

The spin bowling will be shared by Yuile and Burtt. The team will practise at Lancaster Park at 5.15 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
