First Gold Star Event To Palmer

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. The former national single-seater champion, J. Palmer, of Hamilton, was in top form at Pukekohe on Saturday, when he drove his new McLaren-Ford car to victory in the first Gold Star championship race of the season.

Palmer, who set up what is believed to be a lap record for the event with a speed of 97.22 miles an hour, was driving the sleek new car for the first time in competition. His win was even more remarkable because he was giving away nearly 1000 c.c. to the runner-up a 2.5-litre Rep-co-Brabham driven by the Australian P. Bolton.

Third was the Wanganui driver Graeme Lawrence (1.5 Brabham-Ford) and fourth, Auckland’s Frank Radisch (1.6 lotus). In the saloon car events, the champion, R. Francevic, was banned from competing in his new 7-litre Ford Fairlane because he did not have papers to prove that enough cars of this type had been mass-produced to make them eligible for racing under the regulations.
