Two Records Equalled

An under-15 competitor, Miss R. McFarland (Technical) claimed two provincial records for her age group when the Canterbury Athletics Centre officially opened its season with an inter-club meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Showing remarkably good early season form, Miss McFarland equalled two sprint records, winning both the 75 yards and the 220 yards by clear margins.

In the B Grade 75 yards, she equalled the 9.lsec record of Miss L. Johns and later

made it a meritorious double Iby dashing around the A (grade furlong in 27.25ec to equal the record of A. Demouth. Miss McFarland showed versatility winning the long jump as well with a leap of 15ft Ilin. The track was in excellent order for this stage of the season and sprinters benefited also from a slight following wind within the tolerance allowed for record claims.

Sprint events generally attracted large fields but distance races were not so well supported, senior events in particular getting sparse entries with many of the leading seniors competing in the provincial 10-mile road race run on the other side of the city. The top sprinters ran impressively. D. W. Mackenzie had too much pace for his rivals in the senior 75 yards and 220 yards winning clearly in 7.9 sec and 22.8 sec respectively.

The former national women's 220 yards champion. Miss L. Hurrell. had a double success, too. Miss Hurrell had command; ing wins with S.Ssec for the 75 vards and 25.45ec for the 220 yards, with Miss A. Horsnell second in both events.

j The Toe H junior, R. Jones, made one of his best starts to be clear.of his opponents right from the start of the 100 yards won in 10.3 sec, two-tenths of a second outside the provincial record. Later Jones tested himself over a 440 yards taking third place in 55.1 in a contest won by A. Gilmour in 53sec.

I Women field events exponents attained a high standard with the shot. Miss D. Charteris heaved the weight 47ft lin for first place with Misses B. Poulsen and S. A Flynn exceeding 40 feet for the minor placings

One of the best performances among the distance runners was that of P. Hesp (Cashmere) in returning 4min 45.8 sec for the boys under-15 mile after a virtually solo run. Distinguished Record The season was officially opened by Mr H. J. Walker, the (member of Parliament for St ‘Albans, who spoke of New Zealand's distinguished record in international sports and the i possibility of this being enhanced at the Mexico Olympics I if athletes dedicated themselves (to their task. The centre vice-president. Mr B. H. Kerr, mentioned that four Canterbury athletes might have I the opportunity of improving I their claims for selection for i Mexico by the centre’s propoj sal to sponsor them for com- • petition in Australia. A Canterbury and New Zealand middleAiistance junior champion, R. Tayler (South Cani terbury), was the first recipient of the Ted Mays Memorial Cup awarded for being the outstanding under-19 Canterbury ath- | lete of last season. i Before the trophy was presented by Mrs Mays, a life member of the centre, Mr N. Smith, paid tribute to the contribution of Mr Mays to athletics, particularly as a coach to many outj standing athletes. I Abbreviations used in the results are: i Aug., Anglican; Ash..
