ADRIFT IN DINGHY

Improvised Shelter (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 5. Two men who drifted helplessly off Whangapararoa Peninsula for nearly 24 hours until Saturday afternoon protected themselves from the weather by huddling under a polythene sheet. The two men, Robert Monaghan, aged 25, and Paul George Scott, aged 22, both of Orewa, were rescued about 5 p.m., half an hour after their 12foot dinghy was spotted by a searching Air Force Iroquois helicopter. The men were fishing about 300 yards off Orewa Beach about 7 p.m. on Friday and intended to return a few hours later. The anchor of the boat dragged in the heavy seas and then the outboard motor broke down. The boat drifted until its anchor caught on off the end of the peninsula. There the men spent the night under a polythene sheet stretched across part of the dinghy. They were located about 3.30 p.m. on Saturday. Neither man was suffering from exposure.
