SHIP ON FIRE

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 5. The captain and chief engineer of a Moroccan motor vessel stayed on board their burning ship in the English Channel yesterday as rescuers saved the remaining 23 crew members.

A Royal Air Force helicopter plucked seamen from dinghies thrown from the vessel, the El Hassani (2700 tons) and landed them on board the Swedish tanker Viris (15,959 tons). The fire broke out on board. A Defence Ministry spokesman said that all the crew had been rescued and two helicopters and three vessels were standing hy the distressed vessel, 20 miles off the Sussex coast.

The Defence Ministry said the captain and chief engineer of the El Hassani were expected to be taken off by a lifeboat from SelSey, southern England.
