More than 17,000 British farm animals had been killed in the epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease, the Minister for Agriculture (Mr Peart) said last night. The number of confirmed outbreaks of the disease increased by 14 yesterday to 75, meaning tragedy for many farmers in Midland and Northern counties. British law orders death for all animals in contact with the disease. By last night, 17,606 animals had been slaughtered—--6455 cattle, 5192 sheep and 5959 pigs.
