Northlands Traffic Jam

The attractions of the Bishopdale and Northlands shopping centres caused traffic jams last evening.

It was the first Friday night of trading by the complete Northlands block and many! shoppers appeared to divide their patronage between it and Bishopdale, where a house was set on fire as part of a fireworks display. Traffic between the two centres kept City Council traffic officers busy and at 8.30 p.m., when the traffic had slackened two officers were still at the Harewood RoadPapanui Road roundabout. At times, the line of traffic waiting to leave Harewood Road stretched to the railway crossing.

Cars lined the Main North Road, where parking was permitted, near Northlands, and all off-street parking near the shopping centre was taken. Langdons Road, which provides the alternative entrance to Northlands, and Restell Street, opposite the Langdons Road exit from the shopping centre, was fully parked. Senior-Sergeant J. Brown, who had six men at Northlands, said the traffic was amazing. He said the Northlands car park attendants worked “very, very hard” to get cars leaving the shopping centre to go by the exit nearest Papanui township, to ease congestion, but cars were still banked up from Northlands to Blighs Road at the ; peak of the jam. He also paid tribute to the traffic officers who, he said.

worked on willingly, although some had not had an evening meal.
