Ten Japanese companies were interested in setting up at Eden near the VictoriaNew South Wales border on the coast, the first timber pulping plant to export wood chips in bulk to Japan, according to the Minister for Conservation and Irrigation, Mr J. G. Beale.
This joint Australia-Japan venture would involve a $2.5 million initial investment, he said yesterday before flying to Tokyo. The Government’s choice was now centred on a few of the companies, with whom he would be having discussions. “I expect the first shipment of wood chips will be leaving Eden for Japan within a year,” he said.
