CAPTAIN SANDY DIES IN N.S.W.

New Zealand about 20 years ago, when his meetings with the brilliant Highland Fling and other topclass performers thrilled crowds throughout New Zealand. Among Captain Sandy’s most important wins in this country were the 1948 and 1949 Auckland Cups. About 1952 Captain Sandy was sold to Australia, where he gained numerous wins, including the 1954 Easter Cup at Harold Park and the 1953 Victoria Easter Cup from 48 yards.

Captain Sandy made several attempts against time over one mile in Western Australia. He recorded Imin 59sec at Gloucester Park, and .< few days later Imin 57jsec at Bunbury. However, neither received full recognition because the galloping pacemaker headed him in both trials.

Bred at Oamaru by Mr M. Ludemann, Captain Sandy was foaled in 1942. At. the end of his career it was estimated that he had won about $lOO,OOO in Australia and New Zealand.
