RACING Shipboard May Improve South Island Record

The Riccarton trainer, J. C.‘ Tomkinson, will travel north on Thursday with Shipboard and Pharasal, form runners for the second day of the Wellington spring meeting.

Pharasal is one of the light-weights in the Awatea Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double on Saturday.

Pharasal has been campaigned at Trentham before but Shipboard will be a newcomer at Trentham.

He started racing only in July, and will be having only his fourth start when he contests the Rimutaka Handicap on Saturday. Mr A. N. Smith’s four-year-old Messmate gelding goes to Trentham with a short racing record, but an impressive one. He has had three starts for two wins and a second, and with the inside barrier position in a field of 19 in the $2OOO race he has a good chance of improving an impressive record. The stable jockey, A. J. Stokes, will ride both Pharasal and Shipboard on Saturday, but will return to ride at the North Canterbury meeting on Monday, when his mounts will include Seminole, one of the early favourites for the $2OOO Beehive Brandy Handicap, and Manana, a member of the Tomkinson team racing against the sprinters. Next Please, Quick Flight, and Summer Magic will complete the South Island representation at Trentham on Saturday. Next Please’s programme has been left open. He is an acceptor for both the Burnham Water and the Belmont Handicap, both mile events.

The Burnham Water Handicap should be easier for Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane’s four-year-old, which pulled hard in his race last Saturday, and finished eighth after making a short-lived spurt on the inside in the straight.

E. G. Low will return north to ride Next Please again. Summer Magic, sixth in the

Wellington Handicap last Saturday, should be a fitter horse for the Watkins Handicap this week. This race is the first leg of the T.A.B. double, and Quick Flight, second to Red Chips at Orari on Saturday, is in the second leg, the Awatea Handicap. There will be an on-course concession double on the Rimu Hurdles and the Rimutaka Handicap. Acceptances:— 11.30 a.m.— RIMU HURDLRS
