Decision To Seek Report On Medical School 6 Wise’

The University of Otago had wisely decided to temporise by inviting an expert on medical education to report on the defects and the needs of the Dunedin Medical School, says the latest bulletin of the New Zealand Medical Association. It had been decided not to proceed with the appointment of a permanent dean for the school. Instead the Council of the university had invited Professor R. V. Christie, dean of the faculty of medicine at McGill University, to review problems facing the medical school, and to present a report and recommendations, both with regard to curriculum and to organisation. The association said that, in the meantime, Professor W. E. Adams had been

appointed acting dean for next year.

It was hoped that Professor Christie’s report would be ready in time to be considered with the plans for the next quinquennium. The professor had acted as adviser on medical education in a number of countries, and had served on the panel which reviewed the needs of medical schools in Canada. The association stated that many things would have to happen before Dunedin became a good modern medical school. But none of these could happen until the student intake had been drastically reduced and the establishment had been drastically increased.
