START OF WORK
The first actual work on the new northern motorway started in 1962, when preliminary willow clearing was started in the area near the southern branch of the Waimakariri River. Early aerial photographs provided the basic survey for this work.
Later, a centre-line ground survey was made, and a flight was arranged to obtain photographs which could be enlarged and corrected to five chains to an inch. Studies were made of the Waimakariri River as a source of fill material, and since 1962 activity has increased steadily. Completion of the motorway to Pinehaven is not expected before 1970.
