Aust. Lifts Ban
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. The ban on Australian golf professionals competing in the New Zealand Open has been lifted.
An ultimatum to the professionals by the Australian Golf Union, the national amateur body, caused the shock withdrawal of the ban. The A.G.U. on Friday threatened to withdraw every golf course in Australia as a venue for the 1967 Australian professional title next month unless the ban was lifted. The lifting of the han means that top Australians such as K. Nagle, P. Thomson. B. Devlin, F. Phillips
and E. Ball are now almost certain to compete in the New Zealand Open. When the professional association resolved to defy the A.G.U. the biggest split in Australian golf history loomed. s
But the Coffs Harbour committee stepped in and saved open warfare by releasing the P.G.A. of its promise to protect the Australian tournament with the ban.
