A private surveyor will be engaged by toe City Council for some of the preliminary work on toe investigation of the Merry Estate at Kerrs Reach as an alternative to Queen Elizabeth 11 Park as a site for an all-weather athletic track. The council was advised last evening that its own design division was heavily committed on estimates work and unable to do the intensive investigations required. “Hackthorne House.”—The council agreed to steps to have toe Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council appointed trustees of the estate of John Young, who bequeathed “Hackthorne House” to the council for use as a home for the aged, with conditions that' vegetarians be given preference. The transfer of trustees was proposed after long legal negotiations and on condition that the welfare council was entitled to a Government subsidy. It was recommended that provision should be made in any home for infirm pensioners from the City Council’s pensioners’ cottages who required temporary or permanent medical treatment.

Factory Site. Permission was granted for a flock and textile waste material teasing plant to be established in Maces Road, Bromley. Airport Lounge.—Tenders will close on November 1 for the construction of the overseas departure lounge at the Christchurch International Airport. The estimated cost is $20,000. Boundary Adjustments.—

Crs A. R. Guthrey, G. D. Hattaway, H. E. Denton, and N. G. Pickering were appointed to represent the council at a meeting with the Waimairi County Council on October 31 to discuss boundary adjustments and local body reform. Property Bought—A property next to the main entrance to toe Packe Street depot of the Municipal Electricity Department containing three tenanted flats was bought by toe council for $7OOO.

Homes For Aged.—The council accepted a trust created by Mrs V. J. Hollander in 1959 which has the ultimate intention that assets will be handed to the council to build dwellings for needy aged persons. It was estimated that toe council would eventually benefit by about $30,000.
