No Summer Matinees
Matinee showing of films on Sundays during the summer months was refused by toe City Council last evening. Earlier in the year the Savoy and Regent Theatres were given permission to have matinees on alternate Sundays for a trial period frpm May to October. The theatre companies said last evening that only films approved as suitable for persons of any age would be shown and that staff would be engaged on a purely optional basis. They asked for permission to have Sunday matinees throughout the year. The Motion Picture Projectionists’ Union made the “strongest possible objection” to any extension of Sunday matinees, and said in a letter that it could not be claimed fairly that there was any need for Sunday matinees during toe warmer weather.
“Young people, elderly people and visitors need entertainment in toe summer just as much as they do in toe winter,” Cr A. Schumacher said. Cr M. B. Howard, M.P.: There is plenty of good fresh air for them.
