Bright Chief Booed

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. With Gold Chick and Geyser Land, two of his most dangerous rivals, so badly served in the running as to be all but out of the race Bright Chief easily won the Mitchelson Cup at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday. Geyser Land had so little room in the finish that he went to the post virtually pulling up although only eighth. Gold Chick had his chance settled when he was pushed back to near last with half a mile to go. Geyser Land and Gold Chick raced on terms, about midfield to the half mile. The next moment several of the runners moved forward so quickly on the outside that in no time Gold Chick and Geyser Land had lost their positions. Bright Chief, on the other hand, had only to run over a little extra ground to keep out of trouble. Bright Chief looked the winner all of a furlong out and ran to the finish well clear After a delay, during which the big field was held outside the birdcage entrance, the placings were announced. A brown gelding, from Matamata, Bright Cheif won the Alison Cup at Ellerslie almost 12 months ago. Just a week before the Mitchelson Cup, he finished seventh out of nine in the Spring Handicap on the first day of the Auckland spring meeting. The sudden improvement angered many of the crowd who booed and catcalled his return to scale. For all his failure in the Spring Handicap, Bright Chief was little less backed on this later occasion and quite appropriately he ran the mile and a .half out very solidly indeed. Ariosto, surprised nearly everyone except his ownertrainer, Mr R. C. Manning, with his good showing. BARELLAN WINS As he did so often last season. Barellan outran his opponents when he won the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Epsom Handicap. The middle win of a hat-trick for N. B. Holland, who secured the mount at the last minute after the gelding's usual rider. J S. Humphries, had been injured in a fall, Barellan dashed clear in front after a furlong and stayed there. It seemed, halfway down the run home, that he was about to fade under his 9st 81b, but when Holland urged him he made a further effort to win decisively. The Epsom Handicap was Barellan's third race after a spell. The first two improved him and he was a warm favourite both on the win and place and doubles, Michael, running on gamely, was second, edging out Alkaid and Valiant Rebel. Barellan will be prepared for middle-distances and the first he is likely to attempt will be the Foxbridge Plate, a mile and a quarter at weight-for age, at the Waikato spring meeting. The weather was fine, the track fast and the attendance large. Results: GORDON HANDICAP 12000; 6f. 1/1 MISS LYNETTE d) 8 10 G. R. Edge 1 2/2 IMPETUS (5) car 8-1 I.
