Horton May Be Manager
M. J. Horton, the national coach and former Worcestershire and England batsman, may be the manager of the New Zealand cricket team for the four tests against the touring Indian team in February and March.
The New Zealand Cricket Council’s board of control on Saturday decided that, with the permission of the national coaching committee. Horton would be asked to manage the New Zealand side. The council would appoint a liaison officer to assist Horton in the four test centres. However, later in the meeting the board re-affirmed an earlier decision that Horton would not travel with the New Zealand team to Australia in
November and December as coach. Other decisions from the meeting were: — Play in the three Plunket Shield matches on Christmas Day will start at 1 p.m. After Mr G. C. Burgess (Auckland) had pressed for more information on executive sub-committee meetings, the board decided that at future meetings executive members would be invited to
comment on matters decided between board meetings. The board will discuss with the External Affairs Department its form of assistance to a scholarship scheme being formed as a memorial to the late Sir Frank Worrell, the great West Indian cricketer. The board also deferred until its next meeting a discussion on council administration.
The next board meeting will be held at Auckland, during the fourth test against India in March. Discussion on the board’s fund-raising scheme was also deferred until the next meeting. The chairman (Mr J. G. Leggat) said that the scheme should not be lost sight of. The board discussed, without decision, the possibility of encouraging one-day knockout matches, perhaps on the Sunday during Plunket Shield matches.
