SOUND 88 BY McINTYRE
A magnificent innings by J. McL. Mclntyre placed Sydenham in a strong position in its game against East Christchurch-Shir-ley at Sydenham Park. Mclntyre went to the wicket when his team was floundering at five for 59 and left 131 minutes later with the score at eight for 207. In an innings of controlled hitting he was particularly strong off the front foot and seemed confident against all the bowlers. The Sydenham captain, B. J. Salt, and I. R. Hartland added valuable support and the team was finally dismissed soon after tea for 219
The East Christchurch-Shir-ley attack seemed very subdued but this was mainly caused by the placid wicket. N. Kelly, was perhaps the best of the bowlers with his accurate, medium pace. East Christchurch-Shirley was soon in trouble and it was mainly lack of application by the batsmen that caused the slump. This was emphasised by B. R. Taylor who tried to hit Mclntyre out of the ground at three minutes to six. to be caught by the ’keeper, A. M.
Pearce. Mclntyre proved his worth by taking two valuable wickets and the opening pair P. E. McKenzie and a newcomer A. Walsh, bowled adequately. Umpires: Messrs T. F. Mathie and J. Pope.
