St Albans Well Placed

A competent innings of 43 not out by S. C. Guillen placed St Albans in a fairly sound position against Old Collegians at Elmwood Park.

At stumps, St Albans was 93 runs behind Old Collegians with eight wickets in hand. An amiable pitch did not give the bowlers much encouragement but the slow outfield did restrict the scoring rate and only 281 runs were scored in the day’s play.

The morning was not very happy for Old Collegians. J. S. Baxter and D. S. Banks gave the side a reasonable start but wickets fell regularly and at lunch the score was 83 for five. But a steady partnership between M. Bidwell and A. T.

Bishop and some aggressive batting later by J. H. M. Dawson and N. G. Clark brought some respectability to the score.

Baxter, a master at Christ’s College, was impressive in scoring 32. His defence was sound and was not afraid to loft the ball in front of the wicket. Bishop batted neatly for his 49 and Bidwell also looked a player of some promise. J. A. Harrison, who played second grade last season, bowled his off-spinners steadily to take five wickets for 52 but the rest of the attack was no more than accurate.

Guillen scampered the quick singles with all of his usual enthusiasm, and played some handsome off-side shots. J. W.

Burtt, too. played well until he was caught and bowled by M. G. Lester.

Umpires: Messrs L. and H. Johnston.

N.Z. Selectors Re-appointed After only a short discussion and without the need for an election, the three national cricket selectors, Messrs M. E. Chapple (Palmerston North), K. R. Deas (Auckland) and W. McD. Anderson (Canterbury) were reappointed by the New Zealand Cricket Council’s board of control on Saturday. Mr Chapple was again named as convener. The only discussion came when Mr W. A. Hadlee, manager of the 1965 New Zealand side, said that with another English tour coming in 1969 he wondered whether the board should consider a selector with English playing experience. Mr A. J. Postles, the president, said that Mr Deas had had considerable playing experience in the British Isles, although not as a member of a New Zealand team.

Mr Postles replaced the retiring president, Mr J. Newman, on the selection panel for the Technos Trophy. The other judges are Messrs R. B. Brittenden and D._ J. Cameron.
