Saigon Reports ‘Inaccurate’
The United States communique reporting direct hits by American planes on Friday on shipyards and a big military barracks in Haiphong was inaccurate, reports Wilfred Burchett from Haiphong, the Associated Press says.
Burke wrote: The first and main raid in the small hours of the morning in fact demolished a large hospital convalescent complex, unoccupied except by two caretakers and the 4-year-old daughter of one of them. All . three were killed in their beds. At least 20 bombs —of 5001 b and 10001 b—landed square on the complex, which was almost a total wreck. In a tour of the city, heavy
destruction was obvious in residential area, especially in the most densely-populated Hong Bang ward, one of three city wards. Saigon communiques bear no resemblance to the facts on the raids.
Recently a pig-breeding station at An Thang, south-west of Haiphong, and an urban zone hospital were attacked. The communique listed both as “big military installations.”
