Helicopter Visit A helicopter landed in the grounds bf the Kaiapoi North School shortly before lessons were due to begin yesterday morning. The helicopter, owned by Mr T. Wallace, was on its way to Wanganui, but landed to put off two pupils. The eight teachers at the school were given short trips in the helicopter, and the pilot (Mr W. Black) explained some of the working of the helicopter to the school’s 200 pupils. Long Wait The sealing ( of Telegraph Road, between the Main South Road at Norwood and Darfield, was completed yesterday. When the county engineer (Mr W. J. Bevis) reported this to the Malvern County Council yesterday, he said a motorist delayed by the work, had told him: “I don’t mind being held up for five minutes. I’ve been waiting for this sealing to be done for 20 years." Quail Seen A Californian quail, once common in Canterbury but now rare, has been seen in the Islington area. A cock, grey-brown with multicoloured plumage about the head, perched on a fence on the property of Mr A. Macintosh, of Finsbury Street, on Thursday evening and returned yesterday. The Californian quail was first imported to Nelson in 1865, according to Dr W. R. B. Oliver. It is common in open country, especially hilly regions in fem and tutu country. Christmas Mail The Deputy Chief Postmaster in Christchurch (Mr C. V. Jury) yesterday confirmed dates for the closing of Christmas mail to the United Kingdom and the United States. Postings of surface parcels to the United Kingdom would close at 9 a.m on October 24 and to the United States at 9 a.m. on November 4. He said that mail posted after 9 a.m. on those two days would not be included in bags which would be sure in normal circumstances of reaching their destinations by Christmas. Fishing Rivers The Waiau, Hurunul, Ashley, and Selwyn rivers and the Rakaia and Waimakariri at gorges and mouths, were reported to be clear and fishable by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society yesterday.
