Jumping Show The jumping show and carnival ait Rangiora on Lab our Day, should provide spectators with their fill of exciting and spectacular jumping. The feature event is the South Island juvenile show jumping championship for riders under 21 years, which has drawn a field of 33 competitors. Among the most experienced in this competition are Sansi, ridden by Miss J. Morton, and Flyaway, ridden by P. Thompson, both previous winners of the event Other horses likely to make a good showing are Whispering, Eldora, Calestan, Avapeak, Farewell-to Anne, and the two good ponies Tango and Mastes Simon. The A and C grade competition has also drawn a distinguished field of 21 competitors. Among then are Ariki and Miss Dariini (Oamaru), who also rides Mr R. Williamson’s Salt bush; Brigadier (G. Innes). Risman, Avapeak and th« local horses. Overland Hunter’s Moon, Fiano and Intrigue. There are novelty events throughout the day, includ ing the police dog display vintage cars, pony rides and a match race between a go cart and a horse, round i figure-eight course. Th< day is organised by the jun ior committee of the Hbrs< Society and the Rangion Jaycees.

New President The president of the Horse Society (Mr K. F. McBride) has resigned from his position as he finds the pressure of work on hi* farm too great Mr Mcßride was in his second year of office. Mr R. H. Kendal, the vice-president wa* elected president Rare Honour Miss J. Cresswell, who hes been in England to study for the 8.H.5.1. certificate of instruction, was one of four candidate* to pass. Crabbet Park, formerly the stud and home of the late Lady Wentworth, a world renowned breeder of Arab horses and ponies, was formed into the Crabbet Park Equitation Ltd after Lady Wentworth’s death. It is under the management and instruction of Mr B. Young. Miss Cresswell has been on the staff of Crabbet Park for six month* of instruction, study and instructing. The examination ws* held at Melton-Mowbray, where tiie candidates used army horses and local pony club children as pupils. Mis* Cresswell is the first New Zealand woman to gain the certificate. Of the three other candidates who passed, two were English and one an Australian. Miss Cresswell is at present at Barons Court, Northern Ireland, where she is looking after hunters and also doing some hunting. She hopes to return to New Zealand next spring.

Pony Personality One of Canterbury’s most consistent and versatile 13.2 hand ponies. Torrent, has died at the age of 22 years. In the past the names of Miss Sandra Franklin and Torrent were frequently among the prize winners. They won many championship awards at the local shows. Miss Franklin, now Mrs Francis, bought Torrent from hi* breeder, Miss H. Westenra, of Dunsandel, as a three-year-old and owned him for 19 years. She started riding him when she was nine years old and her first big success was second place in the Branston Cup at the Christchurch show. Later they won the Nydfa Perpetual Cup in 1905 and the Nydfa Memorial Cup in 1966. They specialised in pony, rider unity cup type competitions and won most of the big award* in th* Motion. Torrent was a versatile pony in all form* of the ■port He loved jumping and won the initial Champion Pony Olympic jump at the Christchurch Show in 1951. He was a safe and willing hunter and was always near the front in the hunting field, following Miss Susan Grigg and Autumn Gold over the biggest fences. Together the combtaatioh won the Kennels Cup twice at the Rangiors Show, and competed in gymkhanas. In later year* Torrent was lent to Mrs J. East for her pupils to ride, and, as always, he proved a great success.
