Classrooms Needed
An increase in the roll at Burnside High School next year to at least 1150 would make the addition of three prefabricated temporary claserooms necessary, the headmaster (Mr C. Cross), told the board of governors at its monthly meeting. The school roll in February this year was 1068. It was also vitally important that the administrative space in the school be increased, he said. The thought of adding new classrooms with no more office space was alarming. The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan), said a permanent building would take more than two yean to plan and build if Ministry of Works plans were used. \ Mr E. C. Robinson said Jie board should appoint its own architects, and avoid the delays caused by the Ministry of Worts. Thia would also avoid, building temporary classrooms. With tenders aa low as they were now, the architect’s fee would be well compensated, Mr Halligan said the board had originally decided to apply for two temporary classrooms. The board approved a motion that the number be changed to three. The reason for the sudden increase was that fifth form boys were deciding to stay at school if they had not quali-fied,-Mr Croat said. The third form Intake was still about ‘3OO.
