Alterations At St Augustine’s

Alterations and extensions which wiH cost about $60,000 are being planned for St Augustine’s Anglican Church, Cashmere Hills.

Apart from a tower, which was built in 1914, and a small extension to the back of the church 15 years ago, the alterations will be the first major ones since the church was built more than 60 years ago. The chairman of the building committee (Mr J. H. Hanan) said yesterday that the alterations would involve mainly the east end of the church, including the chancel and the sanctuary, and would increase the seating capacity from just over 100 to about 200.

The old part of the nave, which seated about 60, and the tower and the vicar's vestry at the west end of the chureh would be retained, he said.

The only alteration to the west end of the church would be to the entrance porch, which would be enlarged and raised to street level. Mr Hanan said that the stained glass windows to the church would be retained. A pipe organ, which was made by an Auckland firm and which had been purchased from a Christchurch

resident, would be installed in the sanctuary to the left of the altar, opposite the choir stalls.

A kindergarten, two Sunday school rooms, a choir practice room and a wardens’ vestry will be included to a basement under the east end of the church. Mr Hanan said that the Sunday school had been held to the new parish hall. Details of the plans will be completed this year and it is hoped that building will begin before June. The alterations will take about a year to complete. The drawing by the architects, Messrs ' Warren and Mahoney, show St Augustine’s as it will look when the alterations have been completed.
