Marked Drop In Friesian Values

Values for Friesians showed a marked drop on last year, but Jerseys met a steady inquiry when the Canterbury Combined Breeders’ Association held its annual sale of pedigree dairy bulls at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday.

The sale attracted an entry of 57 head, consisting of 34 Jerseys, 19 Friesians and four Milking Shorthorns.

Seme vendors held out for higher reserves when the Friesians were put up for auction, and as a result, only 10 found buyers in the ring The average price was 5172, compared with an average of HOgns for 12 last year, a drop of $59. Top price was S2lO for a single entry from E. G. Robertson (Springston). It went to a Temuka buyer. Part of the reason for the weaker Friesian sale was that buying interest came mainly from the Canterbury province. In contrast with some winter sales, this annual fixture did not have buyers present from the North Island or Southland.

Jerseys had quite a good sale, and of the 34 offered. 31 were sold for an average of 392. which was fractionally more than the average of 43 2-3gns for 31 sold last year. The top price was $l7O. being paid for a two-year-old from R. W. Frost and Son <Fernside), and another two-year-old from H. J. Hufford and Son (Irwell). Top price last year was 105gns. Yearlings, which predomin ated in the Jersey section, sold to $l4O, this being realised for a single entry from Mrs L. J. Woods (Oxford). During the the sale. 12 Jerseys were sold at $lOO or more. As with the Friesians. buying power was mainly from local districts.

Only three Milking Shorthorns were offered, and three were sold at auction. H. D. Hurford drwell) sold one at $2OO to a Blenheim buyer, and the average of $ll3 for the three bulls was the equivalent of $23 more than last year.
