1000 Entries Expected In Y.M.C.A. Trek

About 1000 young people from the age of six are expected to take part in the Christchurch Young Men’s Christian Association’s first sponsored trek around North Hagley Park on November 4. The trek is being organised by the Y.M.C.A Optimists' Club to raise money for improvements, including new cabins and new ablution facilities, at the association’s camp at Wainui.

The money will also help pay for 17 acres purchased recently for the camp. The secretary of the association (Mr R. J. O’Kane) said . that each entrant would be expected to have a minimum of 12 sponsors. The minimum rate of sponsorship would be 3c a mile.

Prizes of a wrist watch or a transistor radio would be given to the entrant with the most sponsors and to the entrant who covered the greatest distance.

The trek will begin at 9 a.m. in Rollestcn Avenue op-

posite the association's hostel. It will continue along Rolleston Avenue, Harper Avenue and across the cycle track to Victoria Lake. Entrants will then pass the croquet and bowls pavilions, returning to the starting point by way of Rlccarton Avenue.

Mr O'Kane said that there was no limit on the number of circuits that could be made, but no circuit could be started after noon. One circuit of North Hagley Park was three miles, he said. On the same day a garden party organised by the mothers’ chib of the association will be held in the Y.M.C.A. grounds on the corner of Rolleston Avenue and Hereford Street.

Parents have been invited to attend the garden party while their children take part in the trek.
