FINANCIAL TROUBLES

A preliminary survey of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board’s financial position indicated that its commitments for casual labour, the single men's quarters and the Page shelter would drain the funds dry, the chairman (Mr M. J. Fitzgerald) told a meeting of the board this week. In view of this the chief ranger had been asked to keep casual labour to a minimum, to reduce maintenance and suspend the but building programme, he said. Mr Fitzgerald said that the board would be able to continue only with administration and essential maintenance. There was $3OOO left for capital improvements for the next five months and much of this was already committed. The programme for huts, signs, tracks, bridges, tools and equipment for the period would take $3156.
