TELECASTS OF TESTS

Clash With Services

The telecasting of Rugby test matches during times which clash with church services was criticised by clergy and laity at the annual meeting of the Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch last evening. “I wish to make it quite clear that we are not against Rugby, and not against Rugby being telecast on Sundays.” said Mr F. R. Wilks (Timaru). “What concerns us is that we are being deprived of the opportunity to watch it There are 230,000 Anglican families in New Zealand, and an untold number in other denominations, and I doubt if the television programmer has considered the effect his times have on us and on church services.

“I wish to say I approve of Rugby tests and like watching them,” he said. “With the present times I am unable to do so.”

A motion, that the synod request its president to ask the Churches’ Commission on Television to approach the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, to the end that Rugby test matches should not be telecast at times which clash with church services, was passed.
