JULIAN STILL TOP-CLASS
The evergreen athlete, J. L. Julian (Auckland), showed that he has improved with age and will be a threat to the top marathon runners in New Zealand, by winning the national 10-mile road race title at Hamilton last week-end. Julian’s time, 47min 55sec, was the fastest recorded over the distance in New Zealand, on the track or the road. It beat by 22sec the previous best time on the road, set by W. D. Baillie. He now becomes a major contender with D. C. McKenzie (Greymouth) and M. Ryan (Waikato) for the national marathon title next year. Canterbury’s major success was in the unofficial junior five-mile event, in which C. McLennan (Ashburton) took second place.
Other runners in the senior event found the humidity very trying and the best Canterbury placing was B. Welsh (Ashburton), nineteenth. 1. D. Greig, the other Canterbury runner, was twenty-ninth. Attack On World Time (N.Z.P.. 4. -Reuter—Copyright h LONDON.
