Rubber Workers Remain On Strike
The strike by 160 rubber workers at the Woolston factory of Dunlop (N.Z.), Ltd, which began on Tuesday, will continue until at least next Monday, according to Mr T. C. F. Fletcher, secretary of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union.
Mr Fletcher said that at a meeting held yesterday attended by almost all the rubber workers at the factory it was decided not to return to work until after another meeting of the union next Monday. The workers walked off the job on Tuesday after 19 fellow employees had been dismissed.
“These men were all laid off without the union being informed. That and the fact that this is one of the biggest
dismissals of workers in the history of the trade in New Zealand was why the workers walked off the job. “I hope that at the meeting on Monday we will have on paper a number of points which we will set down as our conditions for returning to work. The men want to know where they stand and they want some sort of guarantee against further dismissals as well as doing their best for those already laid off,” Mr Fletcher said.
