Learning Loyalty

If people did not have loyalty, they had nothing, Mr C. H. Upham, V.C. and Bar, told parents and pupils at the opening of the Mairehau High School gymnasium last evening. •

People had to be loyal to their family, to their friends and to their country, he said. He appealed to the pupils to learn loyalty to their school. Perhaps loyalty was easier to learn in a gymnasium than in a classroom.

It required a balanced education of mind and body so that a pupil could leave school and think for himself, he said.

The building was opened by Mrs Mairehau Hutton. The president of the Parent-Teacher Association (Mr S. G. Birss) said that in seven years the P.T.A. had raised $22,600 —$3230 a year —for the gymnasium. The $14750 the P.T.A. had given to the gymnasium had been subsidised by the Education Department with $lB,OOO. The floor space was 5760 sq. ft and could hold an international size indoor basketball court. The tiered seating around the walls had been provided by gifts from the pupils. The headmaster, Mr A. B. Ryan, thanked the P.T.A. for its efforts.
