TOUR OF SEA CADET UNITS

Christchurch was the starting point yesterday for a complete New Zealand tour and recognition inspection of all Navy League Sea Cadets, and an efficiency inspection of New Zealand Cadet Corps Sea Cadets units, by the Director of Naval Recruiting and Reserves (Commander R. E. Lawry, R.N.Z.N.) Commander Lawry yesterday afternoon inspected the Aranui High School's Cadet Corps Sea Cadet unit, which paraded for the first time in uniform and later visited the Training Ship Cornwell of the Sumner-Redcliffs Sea Cadet '■Sv Commander Lawry will inspect the Christchurch Boys’ High School Cadet Corps Sea Cadet Unit, and the Training Ship Steadfast at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus. Sea cadets were carrying ou‘ an important community function, said Commander Lawry yesterday. Boys had an opportunity to further abilities in leadership, and become better citizens. Four Christchurch secondary schools have Sea Cadet units as part M their Cadet Corji—St Andrew’s College, Aranui High School, Boys’ High School, and Christ’s Coliege. Commander Lawry emphasised, however, that the Navy does not consider cadet organisations ah a recruiting ground —although he was pleased to see, he said, that 10 per cent

of Navy entrants in Christchurch this year were once Sea Cadets, a figure similar to most New Zealand centres. Naval recruiting had been satisfactory this year, said Commander Lawry- By the end of the recruiting tour of the country in October, it was hoped that the required number of entrants to the Navy, about 200 all ranks, would have been obtained.
