New Court Officials
Mr P. D. Clancy has been appointed Registrar of the Supreme Court in Christchurch and Sheriff of Canterbury, in succession to Mr J. L. W. Gerken, who will retire at the end of the month. Mr Clancy, who began his career with the Justice Department at Greymouth in 1935, is Registrar of the Magistrate’s Court, and has served in Christchurch for the last nine years, as Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, Official Assignee, and in his present post. He will take up his new appointment—part of a reshuffle of departmental posts notified yesterday by the Secretary of Justice (Dr J. L. Robson) —about the middle of next month.
Mr T. A. F. Withers, Official Assignee in Christchurch, will succeed Mr Clancy as Registrar of the Magistrate’s Court Mr Withers, who came to Christchurch from Upper Hutt, where he was Registrar of the Magistrate’s Court, has been Official Assignee for the last two years.
Mr J. B. K. Curran, senior Deputy Registrar of the Magistrate’s Court in Christchurch will succeed Mr Withers as Official Assignee. Mr B. W. Bayley, Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, has been appointed senior Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court and Magistrate’s Court in Dunedin.
Mr Bayley will be succeeded as Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court by Mr W. D. L’Estrange, Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court in Wellington. Some years ago Mr L’Estrange was clerk of the Magistrate’s Court in Christchurch. Mr M. D. Reedy, Deputy Registrar of the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court, has been appointed senior Deputy Registrar of the Magistrate’s Court in Christchurch, in succession to Mr Curran.
Flares Seen. Tauranga police last night investigated flares seen between Motiti and Karewa Islands, Bay of Plenty. It was believed that the flares had been fired by a Japanese fishing ship.— (PA.)
