All 21 Negroes seeking municipal office in Mississippi have been beaten in primary elections and a staunch segregationist has won the Democratic nomination for governor. Mr John Bell Williams, a 48-year-old Congressman, lawyer and foe of the Johnson Administration, now seems assured of election. The poor showing by Negroes on Tuesday was a blow to Negro civil rights leaders. Four were trying to become the first Negro sheriff in 100 years.
