HILLMANS IN IRAN

TYETAILS for the production of £3O million worth of Hillmans in Iran have now been settled. The cars will be made at a new plant in Iran with a high local content, and may be exported to other Eastern countries.

The locally-assembled Hillmans, which will be called Paykaans (the Persian for arrow) will cost £9OO, compared with £lOBO for the cheapest Volkswagen 1300 and £lO9O for the locallyassembled Fiat 1100. The British-built Minx, previously imported into Iran, cost £l5OO. The Rootes Group has received its first order for 4000 Hunter and Minx models for Iran: last year only 600 British cars were shipped. Rootes Group technicians designed the new plant and supervised the installation of equipment, as well as training local labour.

The chairman of the company which operates the new plant (Mr Ahmed Khayami) said that with continued assistance from the Rootes Group he thought the company could gain half the total new cars sales, which are expected to reach 32,000 a year by 1972.
