Drugs And Children
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY, August 30.
The problem of drugtaking among school-age children should be tackled Immediately, rather than allow it to become unmanageable as in other age groups, a Sydney psychiatrist said last' night. He said he had treated “half a dozen” children for drug-taking in the last year. Dr. Carl Edmonds, consultant psychiatrist to the Drug Research Foundation's referral centre, said the patients—aged 13 to 16—had come from both state and private schools. Some were suffering from overdoses of amphetamine and other “pep pills,” he said. But others also had taken marijuana and L.S.D. (lysergis acid diethylamide). Dr. Edmonds said he believed many more children were being treated by family doctors and public hospitals.
