Wool Commission

Sir,—A correspondent inquires as to the composition and salaries of the Wool Commission, and you give a total figure of £5277 for honoraria and travelling expenses. I

feel certain your correspondent, like many farmers, is trying to obtain an approximation of our wool selling costs. The proliferation of bodies involved makes this very difficult to ascertain as, in addition to the commission, there is the Wool Board, Wool Secretariat, and even such bodies as the Meat and Wool Section of Federated Farmers, all linked by association, some members serving on more than one of the above board. The Wool Secretariat is international, but New Zealand contributes to it very substantially. Its manager (Mr Vines) was recently quoted by a Christchurch newspaper as receiving $30,000 per annum salary. Mr Acland travels overseas extensively. I believe, therefore, that; the figure of £5277 indicates very little.—Yours, etc., E.L.W. August 30, 1967.
